Sir George Bowen has "reverted" himself to the administration of the important Colony of Hong Kong. Finally, your immediate predecessor at the Colonial Department (the Right Honble Edward Stanhope,) on my retirement from office last year, wrote to me (Nov. 26. 1886) as follows:
"I saw with great pleasure the recent announcement in the Gazette" (that is, of my appointment to the Privy Council,) "because I wished it to be one of the very first things you, and others, should express my deep sense of satisfaction that your long and honoured services should thus be recognised by Her Majesty the Queen. Speaking for myself and for the Governors with whom I have been connected, I should like to say that our sense of the value of those services, & of the example which you have set to the whole body of men engaged in the work of Colonial Government, is real and abiding. And by enrolling you on the select list of those seniors who have been summoned to the Privy Council in recognition of their work, the Government encourage you and your successors to follow in your footsteps. Thanking you for your personal kindness and consideration towards myself, both publicly and privately, I hope that you may be given long years of health to enjoy the honours which you have so justly earned."
